Call for Volunteers for SCO–SOC 2025
Are you passionate about birds and conservation? Want to be involved in an event that brings together leading experts, enthusiasts, and advocates from across Canada? Then, you are a perfect fit!
We are looking for dedicated volunteers to help make the upcoming Society of Canadian Ornithologists conference in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan a hooting success!
Why Volunteer?
Volunteers are the backbone of our conference and we couldn’t do it without you! Plus, you will be able to:
- Engage with experts: Network with ornithologists, conservationists, and researchers from across Canada.
- Expand your knowledge: Gain insider knowledge on presentations and workshops, and participate with other social activities throughout the conference.
- Support a meaningful society: The SCO-SOC prides itself on its diversity and inclusivity, that promotes research, community, conservation, communication, excellence, and responsibility for the protection, study, and appreciation of birds.
- Make a difference: Your dedicated time and effort will help ensure the meeting runs smoothly and is an enjoyable experience for all!
Additionally, volunteers may receive a discount on registration costs and fun conference swag!
Roles Available:
SCO-SOC is a bilingual conference! As we aim to create a welcoming environment, we are seeking multilingual volunteers (especially francophone individuals) who can help support monolingual attendees.
- Accessibility Champions: Supporting multilingual presentations, & monolingual presenters. Supporting the Inclusion & Accessibility committee to address concerns or barriers throughout the event. This may include managing microphones, & PowerPoint set up.
- Registration: Assisting with registration desk and selling merchandise.
- Tech Support: Providing in-person tech support throughout the conference.
- Social events: Assisting in social events such as birdwatching expeditions, networking events, and more!
- Site crew: Assisting with set up and tear down of events, supporting participants (finding facilities etc.).
- Additional in-person or remote volunteer opportunities may arise as we near the conference dates.
All volunteering opportunities are open to all and are available on a first-come, first-served basis; SCO-SOC membership, or registration as a presenter is NOT required to volunteer.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older; students (undergraduate or graduate) and early career professionals (within five years of terminal degree) will be given priority, however, professionals over five years past terminal degree are still encouraged to apply!
Volunteer applications will remain open until May 13th, 2025.

Student Presentation Awards will be awarded for outstanding oral and poster presentations. To be considered for these awards, student presenters must be current members of SCO-SOC and conducting research on any topic in ornithology. Students wishing to be considered for presentations awards should indicate their interest when they submit their abstracts for the conference scientific sessions.
Presentation Award categories are outstanding oral presentation by a graduate student (2 awards), outstanding poster presentation by a graduate student (2 awards), and outstanding presentation (oral or poster) by an undergraduate student (1 award). Each prize is an honorarium of $300 (CND). Students competing for presentation awards should be presenting complete works, not proposals. For more details, see SCO Student Awards (sco-soc.ca)
