Honeywood Heritage Nursery

An historic garden nursery dedicated to Dr. A. J. (Bert) Porter

Honeywood Nursery near Parkside, Saskatchewan is an historic nursery dedicated to the work and memory of Dr. A. J. (Bert) Porter (1901 – 2000). A teacher by training, Porter was never formally trained in horticulture. He was an accomplished prairie fruit and lily breeder, who was one of the first to introduce winter hardy strawberries, raspberries, crabapples, apples and plums to the prairies. Porter loved lilies and bred over 40 hardy varieties many of which are still available today.  He was bestowed an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1963 and received numerous other honors from major lily and horticultural societies, as well as being inducted in the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Honeywood Nursery is the site of his family’s original homestead and his long running nursery. As Porter neared the end of his life, a group of neighbours purchased the property and formed a non-profit organization to preserve his horticultural legacy. They restored his log home and many of the original buildings but most importantly, preserved and expanded his gardens and saved his collection of plants. Honeywood is open to the public and offers lovely grounds and special gardens. A great place for a horticultural outing, Honeywood is open until September 19. Honeywood Heritage Nursery
